Dating a xhosa woman

It’s for a film called The Wound, about the ancient practice of Xhosa initiation for coming-of-age boys, and it recently had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The film is being touted as a means to challenge views on what it is to be ‘masculine’.And I understand why, because of this, they may feel passionate about the film’s message. But that doesn’t detract from how disrespectfully I feel Xhosa culture has been treated in , or negate my concerns.I had an overwhelming sense of guilt as I watched it though, as I know that the initiation process is one that occupies a sacred space in Xhosa culture.I feel like I’m being shown something I shouldn’t see…

It makes me angry that something so intrinsically important to Xhosa culture has become diluted to a film-festival competition entry.

How about the global audience this film is being shown to, the people for whom this will be the first (and perhaps only) window into Xhosa culture?

For this wider audience, the lasting impression of Xhosa culture is far from positive, affirming or even simply balanced.
